Who help start the 'Baldwin' Sqn he served in 77and 7 Sqn as Flight Commander of the newly formed Pathfinder Force and was made solelyresponsible for searching, selecting and training all PFF aircrews.
Also signed on reverse by Group Captain W S O Randle CBE AFC DFM FRAeS FIMgt In 1942, Bill was a sergeant pilot with No 150 Squadron, Bomber Command, based at Snaith in Yorkshire, and had already established something of a reputation as a survivor and escaper, in the course of his career Bill was eventually to survive no fewer than 8 Wellington crashes, for which his colleagues jokingly awarded him an 'Iron Cross, Second Class' in the hope that “this officer will thus be encouraged to strive even harder in the cause of our beloved Luftwaffe”! He crashed over enemy territory and escaped through the 'Comete Lines' and returned to combat flying. Cover flown in Chinook HC1, ZD 981.
